Product Details

Puʻu Lokuana, now a grassy hill, was once a pile of hot cinders rained down from a lava fountain here on the flank of Mauna Loa. Grasses brought into this landscape during the ranching heyday of the late 1800s - early 1900 create "lawns" that now serve as the preferred wintering territories for migrating Pacific golden plovers, or kōlea. In spring these long-distance flyers depart these protected areas to breed in western Alaska.
